Volunteer
SAMWAC is a volunteer-run cooperative and relies on engaged shareholders to help keep the system running. We welcome members with a range of skills and interests. Below are current volunteer opportunities within our community. If interested, please fill out an application form.
The SAMWAC Board is always interested in having shareholders come to the meetings to learn how we conduct business and to learn about the issues facing our water company. We are looking to develop new board members who can eventually take over the running of the company.
SAMWAC’s pump control system dates to 2005 and predates modern web-based interfaces, making it challenging to program and maintain. We need a volunteer to learn the system alongside a current knowledgeable board member before that institutional knowledge is lost. There are improvements to be made that would help the system run more reliably, and replacing it entirely with a modern web-based controller is a significant future expense.
SAMWAC uses a cellular monitoring system to track pump and tank status in real time, but it is not configured to meet today’s information needs. We are looking for a volunteer to learn the device and explore the full range of data it can provide, working alongside someone familiar with the current setup.
Our well site network infrastructure is about 80 percent complete. We need a volunteer with IT or networking skills to help finish the job, including site security, backup tank telemetry, and real-time flow monitoring for leak detection. There is also an on-site web server with potential for expanded functionality.
SAMWAC maintains two websites that require ongoing attention, content updates, and familiarity with the data input systems behind each site. We are looking for a volunteer to take ownership of both and keep them current and functional.
SAMWAC has a significant collection of historical records that risk being lost if not preserved. We need a volunteer to inventory what exists, identify gaps, and systematically scan and upload documents to cloud storage for long-term safekeeping.
SAMWAC’s emergency generator is a substantial diesel engine that requires skilled, regular attention. We are looking for a volunteer with diesel mechanical experience to assess its current condition, perform needed maintenance, and establish an ongoing service schedule.
